9/07/10 You may have seen a short report on KOBF tonight about a City of Farmington proposal for pet and bicycle registrations fees. This has been led by one of our city councilmen, Jason Sandel. Be assured, the Velo De Animas is not in favor of this, and is a total waste of time and policy-making! So far, I have not sen any mention of this proposal in any City COuncil Agendas, or Meeting minutes of prior meetings. We are watching, and if this actually goes in front of the City Council, I will be there! The reasons why this fee is bogus are too numerous to mention here. Even Durango tried it about ten years ago, and it failed. FYI 8/20/10 The Velo De Animas donated three new Trek mountain bikes to the United Methodist Center. This was in conjunction with Shantelle Pierce's UMC trail project, and we are happy to support her efforts to promote bicycling! Special thanks to the Pierce family, and Cottonwood Cycles for helping make this happen. Pictured here are Shantelle's mother Jane Pierce, Susan Kimbler (UMC), and Keith Ashmore, VdA President.
8/06/10 We have had a couple of serious bicycle accidents with motor vehicles lately. Please be sure to wear visible clothing and have lights after dark! Please drive WITH traffic and use the shoulder if there is one. THe VdA is working closely with the City of Farmington and the County to upgrade our streets, and keep the streets safe for bicyclists! The Trails in the Glade Recreation Area are still being torn up and widened by illegal ATV use. If you see an ATV or 4X4 riding the singletrack please report it to the sherriff's office or BLM ranger. Get the discription of the offending vehicle, but do not try to confront the individual. If you think we are the only recreation area having major issues with the proloferation of ATVs: BLM Hunting- Responsibility or Regulation! VdA Proposal Documents: REASONS FOR NON-MOTORIZED AREA New Letters from the BLM about BLM website update, and meetings, regarding the Glade Trails: Here (page 1), and here (page 2).
Here's the open letter for the Glade Trails Advocacy update, and a call for community action! Also, in the future, call in ATV abuse of the RAR trails. ATVs are not allowed on the RAR course and other singletrack trails attached therein. Call the San Juan Sherriff’s Dept: 911 and ask for Sherriff’s Dept non-emergency. Take your Cell, take a small camera, and take pictures! Thanks for your help.
